Hi, need to submit a 1250 words paper on the topic Is Democracy Such a Good Thing. A country may be striving for democracy establishment for hundreds of years but once it is established, the result may be not satisfactory and people would keep looking for better conditions. There are many definitions of democracy, but all of them are based on two main concepts, freedom and equality. These two concepts are central for our discussion and further research will be conducted based on them. Current works of political scientists, such as Goodwin (2007), Saward (2003), Hoffman and Graham (2009) and others will be a basis for our further discussion.

In modern political studies, there is a vivid discussion about direct and representative democracy (Saward, 2003. Goodwin, 2007). Direct democracy gives a possibility to every member to vote on every issue. in a representative democracy, members vote on the elections of representatives and representatives vote on different issues. Direct democracy is theoretically grounded but it would hardly work daily. Representative democracy is more efficient. Nevertheless, some societies are based on a combination of both kinds of democracies. For example, citizens of Swiss cantons (small states) have a right to attend an annual meeting and vote on laws passed by their representatives (Dahl, 2010). Of course, in countries with numerous populations, it is impossible to make direct democracy work, that’s why in the majority of countries representative democracy is preferential. Citizens choose representatives who will act in their interests and protect issues relevant to their society.

Sometimes both kinds of democracy may be criticized. Thus Barbara Goodwin (2003) makes emphasis that direct democracy is a guarantee of “supremacy of people” and representative democracy “tends to emphasize the supremacy of the system” (Goodwin 2003, p. 219). This political analyst gives arguments in defense of representative democracy further on. It is evident from her further claim: “people desires should be modeled in such a way that they wouldn’t contradict with other laws”.&nbsp.&nbsp.
