Both the pro-slavery and abolitionists became increasingly aggressive after the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1856 created a struggle to gain the territories for each side of the controversy. The violent acts of The Pottawatomie Massacre by John Brown and the abolitionists which eventually lead to a greater plan that was to begin by the failed raid on the armory at Harpers Ferry were supported by abolitionists escalating the issues over slavery to violence.
