Thus, a form of counselling described, as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) will help him manage his problems by changing the way he acts and thinks. CBT is a form of therapy that aims to assist an individual in managing his problems by transforming how he thinks and acts. It encourages the individual to talk about how he thinks about himself, the universe, and other people, and how what he does affects his feelings and thoughts. When these things are talked about, CBT can assist the individual to change how he thinks (cognitive) and what he does (behaviour) which can assist him feel better about life (NHS Choices 2010, p1).
The therapy will focus on the difficulties and the problems Paul has right now rather than issues from the past (NHS Choices 2010, p1). Paul is having problems with his family and at work, and this has made him to change the way he thinks and acts. Thus, the counsellor will mainly focus on the issues that affect his behaviour and thoughts, that is, the way he thinks about his family and the pressure from work. Practical ways will be looked at how he can improve his state of mind on a daily basis.
