In elderly it starts at an old age usually in the mid-sixties but mostly it starts in the seventy to eighty year old range. Different researches have been carried out and the results show that this desease comes in many forms. The most common form according to the researches is vascular dementia. Vascular dementia is majorly caused by poor circulation of blood in the brain. There are also other types of vascular dementia with the common one called multi-infarct. This type of vascular dementia is associated with the tiny blood vessels. These tiny blood vessels become narrower or blocked hence starving the brain with oxygen and blood. Many questions have been occasionally raised over the possible causes of dementia and whether it is hereditary. However, scientists together with medical researchers have not been able to come up with a clear proof whether the disease is hereditary (Santrock 67-79). Nevertheless, they have come up with many possible causes of this disease especially in elderly people. The possible causes include fixed cognitive impairment. Here, dementia is caused by brain injury that occurs as a single event. The brain traumatic injury may cause generalized damage to the white matter of the brain leading to a temporary reduction in the brain’s supply of blood and oxygen. This cute supply of blood and oxygen may result into hypoxic-ischemic injury. and excessive intake of alcohol, accordion to the research, can also lead to the development of alcohol dementia together with certain recreational drugs.
