Hi, need to submit a 750 words essay on the topic Personality-Erikson's stage theory.
According to McLeod, this stage occurs when one reaches the ages of 19 to 40, normally referred to as young adults. The stage has a number of characteristics, for instance apart from seeking companionship and intimate love with persons of the opposite gender, one can also become emotionally isolated due to fear of not only rejection but also disappointment (Barkway 44).
In my opinion, the stage is quite realistic, this is because information stated by Erikson is applicable in the real world and this is because my elder brother, aged 24 years portrayed some of these characteristics. Once my brother attained 20 years, I would see him in many occasions seeking attention of the female gender. After a number of rejections, his attitude towards women changed automatically, this is because he gradually retreated to isolation and began spending most of the time on his own.
According to Erickson theories, since the stages are chronological, it is clear that the stage will not last for long. At the end of the stage, most people in this age group have a lot of experience on the issue of relationships and intimacy hence are in a position to get married and begin the parenting roles.
In this stage, commonly referred to as the middle adulthood stage, normally comprises of persons aged 40-65 who are normally adults and in most cases married with families (Barkway 45). Most of the people in this stage have already completed their education hence are in successful careers. According to McLeod, people that become unsuccessful during this stage normally feel wasted thus prompting them having the feeling of not only bitterness but also despair. Whereas the unsuccessful feel bitterness, individuals that succeed in this stage are proud of the accomplishments achieved hence have a sense of not only integrity but also satisfaction.
A good example of this stage
