These are Mathilde’s perceptions and the fact that in the end the necklace turns out to be worthless and is the main source of deception depicts that denial of one’s own reality can lead to perception and ideas that may pave the path for one’s downfall. Though, Mathilde has everything that can make anyone envious which includes a comfortable home, servants and extremely doting husbands she still bawls over the fact that she does not possess the immense amount of wealthy that the elites at that time had at their disposal. She was so unsatisfied with the things she had then, she found it hard visiting her wealthy friend Madame Forestier without feeling the sudden and violent pangs of jealousy. The main source of her suffering and chagrin was her financial condition. however by the end of the story, it turns out that the necklace that she thought would make her look wealthy and beautiful, was the main thing that injected immense misery into her life and was the main source of misery in her life, and it was because of the necklace that she eventually had to scrub floors and lead an impoverished life in order to pay off the debts. And in pursuit of something that she did not possess she lost everything they had. This story is somewhat like a fairytale, which does not really end in the way a fairytale would. However, the premise of the necklace closely resembles that of Cinderella, with significant amount of changes in the plot, whereby the Fairy God Mother has been replaced by Mathilde’s friend Madame.
