This movie ends with a conference taking place in Kimberly South Africa. This conference was held and resulted into the formation of the Kimberly process Certification Scheme abbreviated as (KPCS). This scheme was formed in 2003. The aim of this scheme was to certify the origin of rough and mined diamond, for the main purpose of reducing trading that occurred in conflict diamonds. This paper gives an in depth and detailed analysis of the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme.
The main intention of establishing KPCS in 2003 was to prevent trading in rough diamonds which were traded for purposes of financing the various conflicts in Africa, and the world. The KPCS scheme was passed by the UN General Assembly under resolution number 55/56 (Forman, 13). This was for the main purpose of implementing the recommendations contained in the Fowler Report. It is therefore important to understand that the process was initiated by the United Nations in order to protect legitimate governments from being undermined by rebel organizations, by cutting off the major sources of funding to these rebel organizations. It is important to understand that the Fowler report was an investigation on how UNITA was able to finance its activities, despite the numerous sanctions imposed on it, by the UN Security Council (Forman, 13). This report named the organizations, individuals, companies and country’s that did business with UNITA, leading to a conference in Kimberly South Africa on how to stop trading of illegal diamonds.
