After Lincoln assassination by John Booth, the North political leadership was stunned, and the public was left distraught. Union armies were irate on hearing the news, and they sought to wreck vengeance on the southern citizens. This is because they believed the assassination was a conspiracy by the south using John Booths as their marksman.

There were widespread suspicions that the assassinations were a confederate plot. Mobs roughed up south sympathizers to decorate their homes in black since they were mourning. Southern sympathizers hid from such mobs at the police stations or in their homes. Instances of south supporters being killed by mobs were reported. Union troops were also reported to shoot those who exulted in Abraham Lincoln’s death. The police arrested those who dared to insult Lincoln and imprisoned them.

However, there were some areas in the North that had staunch democrats and openly rejoiced in the president’s murder. This included Indiana, Marietta and Illinois. News of such celebrations elicited outrage in the larger population. Cries for vengeance and retaliation attacks against the “slave embracing south” were made, ignoring the need for tangible evidence of south involvement in the presidents assassination.
