Hi, need to submit a 750 words paper on the topic Interpersonal Deception Theory. The following is a situation where I believe the interpersonal deception theory was in evidence. I was interacting with a younger person with whom I did not feel comfortable. and I had to chastise her for her rude and abusive behaviour and question her whereabouts the previous night. At the outset, I was aware that she was more verbally fluid and self confident than I was, and my earlier interactions with her had been directed more towards ensuring that we maintained a pleasant atmosphere, even if it involved biting my tongue sometimes. The nature of my interactions with her was influenced by the prevailing discomfort and tension that generally permeated the atmosphere between us. I started off by asking her quietly whether she had been clubbing the previous night. In response, she did not look at me at all but stared at the floor and chewed gum, offering a vague response, i.e, “oh, maybe, I donno”. The very lack of specificity in her response alerted me to the possibility of deception because the uncertainty and vagueness automatically precluded any detail.
The non verbal leakage signals also alerted me to the possibility of deception. The outward bodily cues that she putting out suggested to me that she was making a deliberate attempt to avoid disclosing the details about where she had been. She was chewing gum and standing with her thumbs linked in her jeans belt, attempting to convey a casual air, which appeared to be a strategy to cover up deceit.
