Over the course of this semester, we have considered the trials and tribulations that ultimately lead to the founding of the United States up until one of its darkest moments, when the union frayed and was nearly torn apart during the Civil War.  Through all that we have discussed and learned, it is hard not to see parallels – perhaps it is better to call them “echoes” – in our present times of this bygone era.

I would like you to think about all that we have studied – from precolonial times up to Reconstruction – and look at your lives today.  Can you see how these distant events have come to bear an influence on your present, everyday lives?
