Overview

Write a paper about a health or mental health condition. The focus should be on how the condition is experienced by those directly and indirectly affected. Example topics include asthma, schizophrenia, HIV/AIDS, pollution, violence such as gun deaths, suicide, bipolar disorder, and depression. Consider narrowing the topic by focusing on a specific population or sub-population (e.g., Latinos, gays/lesbians, immigrants, women) and/or age group (i.e., children, adolescents, adults, elderly).

Suggested Outline

1. Introduction

• Define the condition, citing at least one professional source.
• Describe the relevance of the topic to social work. Provide an introduction statement defining the illness and the significance (i.e., epidemiological importance with regard to prevalence and incidence, and ethological importance with regard to affecting human behavior and social relationships) as a social work concern.

1. Epidemiology and Etiology

• Present current incidence and prevalence.
• Describe known disparities associated with age, gender, sexual orientation, etc.
• Identify risk and protective factors for the condition.

1. Experience of the Condition

• Review the literature and summarize what is known about how the condition is experienced.

1. Discussion

• Critique the adequacy and scope of the literature.
• Discuss the implications of this topic and its importance to social work practice and policy decision-making based on your review of the literature relevant for the illness selected for this assignment.

• Papers should be 5-9 pages (not including the cover page and references), double-spaced with 1-inch margins all around. Use Times New Roman font, size 12. Use headings to guide the reader and format the paper using current APA guidelines.

Citations must be from recent, peer-reviewed academic journals. A minimum of five citations is required with non older than 10 years; at least three must be from academic journals. Interviews with experts (not clients) may be included (in addition to the five citations). Non-commercial websites can be a good source for additional information.
