Homeland Security means protecting the country from various threats either natural or manmade that could cause harm to the citizens of the country. The United States Department of Homeland Security stated its mission is “with honor and integrity, we will safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.” On could also add that the mission of Homeland Security to grow and strengthen values on vigilance, integrity and services to the country and public safety.

Determining the effectiveness and efficient of the history of homeland security can be difficult. The United States government has always held some responsibility for responding to security threats, as well as manmade disasters and natural disasters but the term “homeland security” is relatively new (Zaffar, 2019). Homeland Security was developed and formed after September 11, 2001. One of the biggest difference in “homeland security” pre and post 9/11 is how the nation responded to emergency management. Pre-9/11, emergency management personnel was mostly staffed by retired military service members (Zaffar, 2019). In theory, this would be great for war threats but what about natural disasters such as hurricanes or diseases. Post 9/11 is better suited for 9/11 with the formation of the Department Of Homeland Security and the 22 different agencies underneath it. Post 9/11 Homeland Security is more efficient and effective due to its room to grow and adapt on how it is structured.

Numbers 32:17 states “But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.” This scripture represents the need of the Department of Homeland Security and the 22 different agencies underneath it. The DHS provides a piece of mind that under any given disaster or threat we can live at peace.

What interests me the most about homeland security is the immigration rules and laws. Understand about visas, green cards and immunity completely fascinates me. I have been told that the laws are complex and tough to understand but once you have a grasp on them the opportunities that opens up countless doors. Also, until I have a better understand of the immigration rules and laws its tough to decide on what I will change and why.
