How can electromagnetic waves be used to measure distance?
Using the known value such as speed of waves in that medium.
If we know speed of waves, and wavelength we can measure the time taken be the waves to reach the object (and may be return after reflection in some cases).
Multiply the time taken with the speed of the waves, you get the distance.
This concept is used in radars and SONARS etc.
