How do you calculate sample mean?
Sample mean is the arithmetic average of all the observations in a particular sample. Sample mean is the estimator of population mean.
Given a sample of size n, X1, X2, ..... ,Xn are the observations, then the sample mean is calculated as the summation of all Xi divided by n. In symbols
x̅ = ##sum##(X1 + X2 + ..... + Xn) ##//## n
For example, A random sample of 10 American college students reported sleeping 7, 6, 8, 4, 2, 7, 6, 7, 6, 5 hours, respectively. Then the sample mean is
7+6+8+4+2+7+6+7+6+5 ##//## 10
= 5.8
