QUESTION

How do you convert pounds into newtons?

Good question!!

It depends on what you mean by "Pounds". There is a BIG problem with the English system of units. There are two units that are both named "pound". There is a pound of force AND a pound of mass.

You sometimes see texts with ##lb_f## and ##lb_m## to differentiate between these two.

Start with the number of pounds, put that over 1, and use the conversion so that pounds cancel and Newtons are left on top.

for example, 50.0 lb

##(50.0 lb_f)/1*(4.44822162 N)/(1 lb_f)## = 222 N (to 3 significant figures)
