QUESTION

How do you find the de Broglie wavelength of an electron?

The de Broglie equation is an equation used to describe the wave properties of matter or particles. de Broglie proved that every moving particle has a matter wave associated with it. The wavelength of the wave depends on the mass and the velocity of the particle. λ = h/mv, where λ is wavelength, h is , m is the mass of a particle, moving at a velocity v. de Broglie suggested that particles can exhibit properties of waves.

For an electron one can calculate its wavelength.

Find the de Broglie wavelength for an electron moving at the speed of 6.0 x 1##0^6## m/s (mass of an electron = 9.1 x 1##0^-31## kg).

Wavelength = h / m. v λ = 6.63 x 1##0^-34## J.s / ( 9.1 x 1##0^-31## kg) ( 6.0 x 1##0^6## m/s)

J= N.m , N = kg. ##m^2## / (##s^2##)

λ = 1.2 x 1##0^-10## m.
