QUESTION

How do you find the x and y intercepts of ##4x-5y=20##?

x-intercept = 5; y-intercept = -4

An intercept on an axis is the point where a curve crosses the axis and the distance from the origin is known as intercept As mentioned it is on a axis, thus the coordinates of the intercept point will be ##(X,0)## for ##x## -axis and and ##(0,Y)## for ##y## -axis.

This being said, to find the intercept from the equation of a line, we just need to put the value of one variable to ##0## to get the intercept for other variable

So in the equation above: ##4x-5y=20## let ##x=0## ; we get ##0-5y=20## ;or ##y=-4##thus y-intercept is ##-4##

Similarly, let ##y=0## ; we get ##4x-0=20## ;or ##x=5##thus x-intercept is ##5##
