How to best establish, communicate, and enforce company technical standards while still allowing for creativity and innovation? We are architects so we have a lot of regulatory and best-practice types of things to keep in mind when doing projects and need to ensure that everyone in the company does those things similarly. For example, when doing drawings or writing specifications we need to have some standard practices to make things easier for others to work on the project and to provide consistency in our work product. But we also don’t want to quash any good ideas or creative solutions. And we don’t want to make everyone feel like robots. How can we best achieve those goals?

A definition of our company’s technical standard is a pretty open ended question. For us, I would define it as several different things:
1. Information or knowledge needed to ensure that our projects comply with building codes, best practices, and other written criteria.
2. Information or knowledge needed to ensure that our projects are complete, meet the clients expectations, and are checked for quality.
3. Information or knowledge needed to ensure that our project documentation (drawings, specifications, reports) are complete.
