If I was describing discrete trial teaching (DTT) procedures and benefits to a learner’s family, I would begin with explaining the skills that are being worked on with this approach as well as the goals of DTT.  The skills that are being addressed are a person’s social skills, communication skills, responses to play, and their daily living skills. According to Vincent Carbone, this is a super direct approach that is proven to benefit children with autism because of their inability or struggle to acquire language and other necessary skills in their everyday lives. The procedures that are used with this approach are designed specifically using evidence that is proven to reduce problem behavior, which is an expected issue when working with children with ASD. It typically involves a teacher who is trained in DTT, a child sitting across from them, and then the materials that are needed to teach the child. One of the things that have been proven to be effective during DTT is a fast pace when presenting materials to a child, as well as presenting a higher number of mastered skilled to a child compared to the number of new skills. If there is an error, there is a certain error correction procedure that will be followed in order to obtain results. DTT is an example of evidence-based practice because it is using specific ABA approaches that have been created through multiple studies, research, and peer-reviewed work that has been proven to be successful.
