It's difficult to imagine what our workforce will look like in the year 2038, considering the leaps and bounds that have been made in the last 20 years! One obvious change will be how technology impacts employee job descriptions and functions. Over time, managers may find it necessary to restructure job design and tasks. Tasks that were once required by people to complete may easily be done quickly and more efficiently by a piece of technology. On the other hand, employees of the future may find themselves more highly valued for skills that a piece of technology doesn't possess. These skills may be more "intangible" and may focus more on leveraging people's creativity, trouble shooting, interpersonal skills, etc. I believe that best way for managers to prepare for the future is to stay focused on the goals of their organization (think about the big picture) and remain open-minded and flexible as to how these goals get accomplished in terms of staffing. Managers will need to be aware, now more than ever, of market trends and how organizations can best serve their customers. This may mean getting creative with job descriptions and the kinds of tasks they delegate to employees. Managers will also need to find creative ways to screen applicants for traits and abilities they are searching for in future applicants. Needless to say, individuals entering the "management world" should prepare themselves to have a quick learning curve and remain adaptable in order to keep their organizations successful.
