1. make a Preliminary Thesis statement: The specific argument that you think you will make in your research paper. This should be worded clearly and strongly (e.g., “I expect to argue that . . .”) 

2. make What you already know about your argument. Common knowledge or knowledge from personal experience alone is fine. You do NOT need to show knowledge of the sources you have located in the proposal. (E.g., “I already know that . . .”)

3. give Research Questions: At least two or three things that you will need to learn to make your argument. (E.g., “I still need to learn . . .”)

4. Search Strategy: Exactly where you have looked for your sources and where you will look if you expect to need additional information to answer your research questions. Be specific. Which libraries, databases, journals or other locations or sources have you investigated or will you investigate? (E.g., “I found my sources by using the keywords . . . and searching in the database . . .”)
