I have a very simple question. Should I use quotation marks in this passage?

The students reflected on times they were diligent and I rewarded every student who contributed to our discussion. We concluded being careful to close the door and persistently doing it makes you a diligent student just as much as doing your homework is. After this discussion, I handed out some paper and told them to write, "If I close the door, then..." and left a blank for them to fill in. Many of the students wrote, "the teacher is happy", "I am not sick", or "my friends are happy". I instructed the students to draw a picture of themselves closing the door and the result of their actions beside it. I allowed them to reflect upon their actions with a simple sentence and a picture.
