There are many reasons why parents teach their kids to be self-sufficing; in the story of “winter of hardships” such lessons that convey the important values for one to not depend on others significantly, and that parents believe they are of significant to their children. This story portrays a group of people who were suffering very badly from the tough winter. The main lessons to be drawn from the story are for one be self-dependent, to understand the cultural teachings, and learning how to be patience.
