Topic selection tip: If you are contrasting, be sure to avoid this scenario. Do not choose a pair of items for which one item has something that the other item lacks. Avoid this because it is really impossible to give specific examples of the lack or absence of something. For instance, suppose you are comparing your cat to your dog, and one category of contrast is that your dog has markings on its fur, but your cat lacks markings. When discussing your dog's markings, you could hopefully come up with two to three specific descriptive details (perhaps, the markings are black, square-shaped spots about one inch across). However, you would not be able to come up with similar specific details to describe your cat's contrasting condition because there is a lack of marking to describe. Since one of the main goals of this class is to support all claims with specific details, you would want to avoid putting yourself in this kind of corner in which there is an absence of details.
