Act 1opens the overture in which the historian comes on stage and gives his story. It is the story of Kin Arthur who is riding through the land trying to find worthy men to join his Round Table. After several failed attempts, he finds Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Robin the not-so-quite-brave-as-Sir-Lancelot and Denis Galahad. However, convincing Galahad to join the Round Table takes the effort of the Lady of the Lake. Finally, King Arthur recruits Sir Bedevere the Strangely Flatulent.
Not long afterwards, King Arthur and his knights receive a call from God to go in search of the Holy Grail. They set off on their quest but they encounter French sentries who scare them away. They also encounter a fearsome group of knights known for saying “ni”. The hostile group demands a Broadway musical from King Arthur’s knights before they can proceed on their quest.
In the meantime, the Lady of the Lake wonders why she has been left out of the quest for the Holy Grail. Prince Herbert, the son to the King of Swamp Castle, glumly sits in his tower waiting for a knight to rescue him from the clutches of his father. Lancelot eventually arrives to rescue him. The Lady of the Lake gives words of encouragement to a thoroughly discouraged King Arthur.
Before the quest comes to the end, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table have one more hurdle to face. They meet a pyromaniac enchanter named Tim and afterwards, they have to kill the Killer Rabbit of Antioch. To achieve this feat, they require a completely new weapon for which they have to receive instructions from brother Maynard and the Monks. Having overcome these final obstacles, it is time for the Knights of the Round Table to celebrate with a Broadway wedding.
The play brings to the fore certain prominent themes. To begin with, there is the theme of bravery and determination.
