The purpose of this study will be to determine the correct manner to approach consumers in a retail environment that facilitates a positive consumer experience and yield successful business outcomes. More specifically, whether or not consumers are more disposed to completing a purchase and/or make service changes if they are left to shop alone for a period time prior to being approached and interacting with a salesperson. What has yet to be determined is the most effective way to initiate contact. Hypothesis 1: Consumers are more disposed to completing a purchase and/or make service changes if they have opportunity to browse on their own. Hypothesis 2: There will be a difference between the influence reported by men than that reported by women. This proposed study will be an observation, and will not involve any interaction with the store's employees or customers. The observation will be limited to two 7 day week periods during the operating hours and two methods. Week one will focus on an immediate approach method following the delayed approach method in week two. The quantity of purchase will be measured based on the type of salesperson/employee approach or lack thereof during the course of each day for each week.
Description of Target Population
The participants included this study will consist of a random sample of the salesmen and saleswomen of whom are employed by a randomly selected retail establishment and the customers who voluntarily visit the same retail location. Data will be collected through the use When the participants enter the retail location, the data collection will begin and will end upon exiting the location. The researcher will be stationed in a location that will provide a complete view of the study area. As each customer completes their purchase or lack thereof, upon exit of the retail location, a member of the research team approaches and requests for them to participate in the experiment by filling out the materials necessary for participation. Approximately 50 customers will be included in the sample in total.
Procedures
The researcher and research assistants will observe the individuals who were perceived to have expressed interest in the possibility completing a purchase and/or those perceived to complete a purchase. The researcher will begin data collection as the participants enter the retail location and will end upon exiting the location. Data, which will be collected, will be limited to the employee's method of approach- immediate (Allowing the customer less than a minute of browsing) or delayed (Allowing the customer at least a minute of browsing)—and the customer's reported knowledge of store products, gender of both the employee and customer, and the purchase outcome of the interaction. The determination of if a customer completed a purchase will be if the customer leaves the store will a bag, merchandises, and/or paperwork.
