I need help responding to this discussion post...

I could not remember where I saw this post initially, but I came back and looked for it tonight after reading through the discussion posts on Reconstruction. I do not believe that Lincoln ever owned slaves. In fact, his father, if I remember correctly, moved his family from Kentucky to Illinois because he believed that slavery was an economic, moral, and social blot on the nation, and he wanted to get his family away from the damaging effects of the institution. Lincoln, therefore, grew into adulthood in a state where slavery, by law, was prohibited.

That being said, there were prominent members on the Union side who, at some point, owned slaves, including the commander of the Army of the Potomac (and future President) Ulysses S. Grant and Vice President Andrew Johnson. Lincoln was a lot of things, but I don't believe he was a slave owner.
