INT-1700: Understanding Operating Systems (Zero-cost course material)
Unit 1 Lab Assignment 1 (40 points)
In this assignment, you will learn to collect information about your computer, Install OSs in a virtual environment, and Deploy and use virtual machine instances in the cloud. For each of the three questions, do the following:
1. Create a document (use Microsoft word or any equivalent tool such as LibreOffice) and name it appropriately to reflect the assignment type, number, and your name.
2. Answer the following questions (if any) in the document you created and justify your answers. To do this, you may need to perform some tasks on your computer, use a snipping tool to take screenshots, and paste the illustrations/pictures into the document.
3. Save and upload the document to the learning management system (Blackboard). Upload the three documents at once.
YouTube and Internet search engines will be your best helpers.
Do not forget to show visual evidence of the main actions you took to answer the questions.
Question 1: Know your Computer (10 points)
1. What are the make and the model of the computer hardware which you will be using for assignments in this course?
2. What operating system is running on it?
3. What are the hardware specifications? List 10 hardware specifications, including the RAM capacity, type, number and capacity of hard disks(s), number of CPU cores, processor speed, power supply, cache capacities, and more.
4. Get into the BIOS/UEFI of the computer (you may use a camera to take evidence of your actions if no snipping tool is available).
a. How did you access the BIOS/UEFI?
b. What is the boot order of the computer?
c. Is the computer configured to support virtualization? If not, change the BIOS setting so that virtualization is enabled.
5. Get into the command line interface of your system. How did you do it?
Question 2: Install OSs in virtual environment (15 points)
In this question, you have to install/enable a hypervisor and install two guest OS, a Linux and a Windows Server. Do the following:
1. Download and install a type 2 hypervisor (VirtualBox or VMware Player) on your current OS installation. Alternatively, you may enable the Hyper-V (type 1 hypervisor) on your Windows 10. If you have Windows 10 Home edition, you may need to upgrade it to Windows 10 Education edition.
2. Download Ubuntu Desktop 18.10's .iso file from the Internet and install it on a VM that you have created. You may choose any alternative Linux distro, e.g., Fedora, CentOS, etc.)
3. Create a free account on https://aka.ms/devtoolsforteaching, Download a free MS Windows Server 2016 Standard's .iso file using your free student Azure account, and install it on a VM that you have created. I will accept any Windows Server version you may use.
Note: If you already installed these apps and systems, then, you should run them and take screenshots of the running systems.
Question 3: Deploy and use virtual machine instances in the cloud (15 points)
1. Create an Amazon Web Services (AWS) account and deploy a Windows Server (or any other Windows OS) and a Linux VM of your choice. Make sure you choose free tier options only.
2. Create a free student Microsoft Azure account (If you do not have one yet) and deploy a Windows Server (or any other Windows OS) and a Linux VM of your choice. Make sure you choose free tier options only.
