The disease is usually spread by organisms known as triatominae. The disease was named after a Brazilian physician, Carlos Chagas, who discovered it. The disease was discovered in the early 1900 in Brazil when a number of slaves and laborers working at a railway firm were noted to suffer from an uncommon ailment. Dr. Chagas did research and discovered a protozoan in the victim’s blood and named it Trypanosoma cruiz.
Sweet & Gibbs (2009) state that the Chagas disease can be treated by using either benznidazole or nifurtimox since the two medicines have proven their ability to kill the parasite. The two medicines are efficient for treating the disease if it identified in the early stages of development. People infected with the disease should be treated before the disease starts to develop since anti-parasitic treatment can aid to stop the disease.
The disease is very harmful to the social, political and economic status of the world. An example of the social aspect is that areas that are highly prone to the disease hinder tourism activities. In summary, Chagas disease is an issue of global concern and, therefore all countries should join hands in its control and treatment.
