The first and primary lesson which comes from the case study is that IT and the business processes which develop from the use of IT must be applied judiciously. For example, the case study notes that there were a number of false starts made by the organization with regard to developing a better work process through the using of information technology and this only goes to show that the right strategy and the right planning process is essential before any business changes can be made and accepted.
Simply having a solution present in the market does not necessarily mean that the particular solution is a useable one or that it is applicable for the organization in its present state. A company needs to evaluate the business reasons for going in a particular direction since without that business reason. the investment in a certain technology may go unused and wasted. Further, stakeholders must be involved in the process by which a business makes changes to its technology infrastructure and the case study shows that the organization did a lot to ensure that the employees would be accepting of the new system.
This does not mean that the organization faced no issues in terms of company politics since Ratzburg (2002) clarifies the nature of conflicting interests within a group to lead to political situations. The case study does show that the expectations of some groups were not met in full from the proof of concept and the prototype systems developed for the organizations which meant that political issues were certainly there to deal with. The dimensions of political issues that can come with a business decision to integrate some form of technology into a business process were not that well covered by Painter (2004) and it seems that more information on that topic would be quite useful.
