Prejudice on women lies on concepts such as sexual equality, and a woman’s place being the home. Ning rebels against tradition, especially on social prejudices against divorced women in modern China. It talks about Zhu LXiaofen, who is happily divorced at the age of thirty-four, although her colleagues, boss, and close friends are sympathetic, see her as an outcast, and contribute to her post-marriage discontent (Ning).
Ning also mentions the right to equality for women in the place of work. Chinese women are enshrined in a forty-year-old heritage of socialism that has promoted the economic insufficiency of women. In the end, divorced women remain with no source of livelihood, lose their rights, and have to continue the dependence theory in which they have to remarry. The story details how Chinese women are now interested in work and employment opportunities, rather than love and family ties.
The story is from a feminist perspective, in which the society presumes that women are the victims of a divorce. Zhu LXiaofen desperately tries to convince people that she in fact wanted the divorce and feels quite liberated. The chauvinistic society sees men as superior, and women prejudiced as the ‘second’ or ‘weaker’ sex, dependent on men. Her friends do not seem to understand the joy she has a free women without any obligations to a man. She now has a chance to enhance her self-development, something that she could not do under the constraints of her husband.
