Third world countries are usually ranked very lowly in terms of economic, political and social development. Learning about third world development has a number of benefits. It exposes people to the problems and contemporary issues that come with development. Learning about third world development puts one in a position to examine the environmental, socio-economic and political patterns in third world countries (Westra, 2011). This can speed up the rate of development in third world countries because one will understand the reasons why a country is underdeveloped in the first place.

Another benefit of learning about third world development is that it gives a learner the opportunity to explore the development gap between poor and rich regions and countries.
