The Sorrowful Woman of Gail Godwin is one with a very effective plot.It is said that all plots center on conflicts and this is of four kinds: between people, between a person and society, between a person and nature and lastly, between different aspects of the self (Dory Lynch). As it is easy to read and understand and more importantly it is easy to remember as the highlights of the stories as clearly written and conveyed. The incidents in the stories are like processed data in the minds of the readers, making it easy to remember. The sequences of events are so excellently organized that the one who reads the story will easily identify the seriousness of the disease if the wife. One will easily conclude that as the days pass, this emotional, mental and physical illness gets worse. This is because the incidents around her such as the firing of the maid, the inability of her son and husband to see her, the greater responsibility and difficulty on the part of the husband in managing the house, and the increasing dosage of medicine that she takes were all clearly sequenced and narrated. It is this sequence of important events that made the story easy to grasp and remember. Therefore, the story can be said as having an excellent plot. The plot also contains two conflicts. There was conflict between people and conflict between the different aspects of the self. The conflict between different aspects of self is also sometimes called the "inner conflict"...

She was in an inner conflict of being pitiful about herself and therefore has her focus on herself rather than others versus the ability to enjoy what she has-a family, wonderful husband and a sweet child. Her characters showed the sadness and at the same time the care for her family which shows an inner conflict.

The woman was also in a conflict with other people or a relational conflict. This conflict "centers on the mutually exclusive goals of the protagonist and the antagonist" (The Writer's Mentor). The husband found a girl who was to look after their child. The girl was "young, dynamic and not pretty" (Godwin). 'She painted the room white, fed the child lunch, read edifying books, raced the boy to the mailbox, hung her own watercolors on the fresh-painted walls, made spinach souffl, cleaned a spot from the mother's coat, made them all laugh, danced in stocking feet to music in the white room after reading the child to sleep" (Godwin). She also played with the husband often. This made her a true encouragement to both the husband and the child. But the sorrowful woman did not like her. It is because of jealousy that she got upset with the girl. This conflict resulted to the girl leaving their home.

The conflicts were well written and described in the story, highlighting it in a very artistic way so that it can easily be understood by the readers.
