It should be noted that this book was written in the 60’s and therefore some inaccuracies may occur in the descriptions of the Appalachian area by Caudill. Caudill argues that all the mountain people in the Appalachian area were the people rejected by Europe. He has labeled them as "human refuse" of Europe. However, the above argument seems to be far from reality as modern studies have proved that those people were revolutionists rather than human refuse. Such inaccurate claims can be visible throughout the book. In other words, many of the claims put forward by Caudill are fabricated stories or exaggerated things.

Even though this book was accepted with both hands by the majority of the people, people from Eastern Kentucky were not ready to welcome this book because of some controversial comparisons about the Appalachians by the author. The author compares the Appalachians to animals which were indigestible to the people from Eastern Kentucky. In his opinion, “White man who moved into the rich forests of Cumberland plateau brought with him a form of stone age agriculture” (Caudill, p.24). In other words, the author ridicules the attitude of the immigrants in who moved into the rich forests of Cumberland plateau. In his opinion, those people spoiled the region because of their selfish motives to exploit the nature as much as possible. Throughout this book, such controversial narrations can be noticed. The author could have avoided such things in this book to make it more acceptable to the public. At the same time, there are many good things and facts also in this book.&nbsp.For example, the narration about the Indo-Anglo cross breeding is useful for people who are interested in studying history or anthropology.&nbsp.
