Few slave-mothers know anything of the months of the year, nor of the days of the month" (p. 35). In the second chapter of the book, the author brings out his eagerness to know more about why some people entertained slavery and how he could with such an understanding help in the elimination of slavery. In his subsequent chapter though, he seemed to be unsuccessful with his attempt as he laments of how slavery had succeeded in tearing his entire family apart, making him not even have a feeling of sorry towards his mothers death.

Emerson perhaps supports the fact that we are more of individual beings than social beings than any other person under the sun. This is because with a personal theme and motto of "Trust thyself", Emerson centered his writing of Self Reliance on the need for each person to be a lord of his own conscious. As far as the philosopher was concerned, the last thing that any person should do is to be entangled by the thoughts and ideas of other people: such that instead of pursuing their personal agenda, these people go after general norm.
