Comparison of the urban and rural settings in Alice Walker’s story Everyday use

Mrs. Johnson fantasizes about scenes on some television programs in which parents congratulate and embrace their daughter who has been successful. She sometimes dreams of the day she and her daughter will also appear on Television and how the congratulatory messages will bring tears to her daughter Dee. This shows how Mrs. Johnson believes that her daughter Dee, through the exposure in the city will be successful in life. Mrs. Johnson however does not imagine ever looking at a white man in the eye. Dee can however do so easily. This difficulty in having eye contact with a white man portrays racial discrimination and inequality. Dee’s exposure to the city life where she got the opportunity to interact with people of other races changed her perception towards them. Mrs. Johnsons lack of interaction with other races due to her stay in the countryside makes her feel less superior to the whites.

Mrs. Johnson describes herself as “a big-boned woman with rough, man-looking hands “She proudly adds how she “can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man.” (Walker, 72).These shows how she has accepted her physique and were proud of the way she looks. She also describes how hard working and fearless she is. This is in contrast to how most city women find it difficult to accept themselves the way they are, most opting for plastic surgery. Mrs. Johnson depicts how resilient and hardworking country women are
