My goal in this paper is to explain how statistics can be used in sports.

There are many scenarios whereby teams have used statistics and analysis to determine a team’s success. This is a common practice in many sports such as American football, rugby and soccer. There are various statistical tools that are used such as standard deviation, probability and correlation. The results obtained can be used to facilitate signing up of players with good performance. The standard deviation can be described as the average amount by which scores in a distribution differ from the mean. To obtain the standard deviation you find the square root of the variance. The variance is obtained by finding the difference between the mean and each item, squaring and then summing up the difference, and finally dividing the sum by the number of items. Correlation is defined as a mutual relationship between two or more things.

A quarterback and a running back are part of the defense team. The quarterback usually determines how the rest will play by bellowing the motions at the line of scrimmage. The ball is passed to him by the center and he then hands it off to the running back. The running back may choose to pass the ball or run with it till the end line to score points. Therefore, the performances of both the quarterback and running back are highly correlated. In addition, the players can have different correlations such negative or positive correlation depending on their performance. For instance, if their performance mutually increase they have a positive correlation.
