In the hierarchy of needs, the most basic of all the needs are the physiological needs like hunger, thirst, shelter (Maslow, 1954). Thus the monetary reward is the most important motivating factor for any employee that works in an organisation. Thus the salary is the most basic need of the individuals. Just above the basic needs the individuals have the safety needs. In organisations every individual would want job security and other benefits like accidental insurance, family healthcare benefits and so on. The social needs come next in the level of hierarchy. The employees need to have a good environment for working, the peer groups should easily collaborate with one another and the social life that the employees have in their work places. The esteem needs followed by the self actualisation need tops the highest need category and would be looked for by the employees when all the lower needs have been satisfied. Out of these the most important factor for employee satisfaction is the salary of the individual because it is one of those factors of motivation by which the higher needs can be fulfilled by an individual. Along with this, job satisfaction is another motivating factor and determines whether the employee would remain in the job or not. When a person is doing a job where his or her skills are getting reflected and the job is mentally stimulating then he would be encouraged to do more so that he can learn more and gain more on his personal front out of this job (Porter and Lawler, 1968). A large number of factors contribute to the amount of dissatisfaction that an employee may face in an organisation. Most of the organisations employ individuals with a definite set of skills. The employees look forward to a level of job satisfaction from the job that they are recruited for. If the employees do not enjoy the work that they are doing or their skills are not getting exploited in the right manner, they would not want to remain in the job. Therefore lack of job satisfaction is one of the most important factors for dissatisfaction among the employees. Along with this another de-motivating factor could be lack of proper reward system. If there is no reward system in the organisation and the employees get paid at a uniform level irrespective of the performance delivered, then no employee would feel enthusiastic to work more for the company. As a result the total output of the company will get hampered. Lack of proper organisation culture can also discourage the employees. If the employees are not allowed to take part in the decision making in an organisation, they would not be eager to know about the future plans of the company. Thus they would look into their own interest only. Topic 2: Goals in Motivating Employees Kurt Lewin was the first person who posited that goal setting was an important factor that would encourage the employees to perform better. Goal is defined as a systematic level of aim or task that the employees desire to achieve. The achievement of a goal would make a person satisfied with his present condition and would encourage him to aim for a higher goal in the next phase. The employees have to have an acceptance of that goal. If they feel that the goal is not achievable they would never even try to achieve so (Shein, 1992). They have to be committed towards achieving it as well throughout the tenure of the particular task. There are other factors related to this like the specificity of the goal, the difficulty level of achievement of the goal and how the employees are reacting after the goal has been achieved.
