The case study "Timbuk2: Outsourcing, Offshoring and Mass Customization" talks about the company's Timbuk2 marketing channels they use in order to meet its customer’s needs. Because e-commerce customers are Timbuk2’s most valuable customers in terms of revenue, the company should do everything that it can to keep hold of such customers. The company’s “Build Your Own Bag” page on its website makes it stand out from the rest of the field. Customers will be enticed by this because they do not have to go and personally place the order and can do it from the comfort of their living rooms. Although to make a customized bag can take more materials and time to make, Timbuk2 can charge customers extra for the privilege of ordering a customized bag at short notice. The company already does this by charging an extra $5 for a non-standard color, but the company could go even further than this. Over time, as some customized options are not used as much, the company could decide to do away with them in order to cut costs. The company needs to be careful that it does not put off potential customers by eliminating options that are popular. Timbuk2 could successfully do this by creating a computer system that tracks how many orders are red, how many contain handles, and how many display logos. After a significant period of time, the company will be able to see which options are commonly ordered and with are not. Timbuk2 should pursue the option of manufacturing in China because the positives outweigh the negatives.
