In the article, Community mental health care delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic: Practical strategies for improving care for people with serious mental illness (Kopelovich, S. L., et al., 2021), the authors suggest that one of the ways clinicians may deal with the increased stress of mental health service delivery during the COVID-19 Pandemic is to solicit the help of “Natural Supports” and “Warm Lines”.  While these interventions seem to be equitable in nature, we can clearly see, just from the distinction made between Natural Supports and Warm Lines, that it is not expected that everyone would have equal access to such resources.  It also does not take into consideration the desire of these support systems to take on the added responsibilities and risks.  Even though the initial purpose of this article was in response to a pandemic, the takeaways of this article are still valid, post-covid, and can be applied in general in our social work.

Purpose: The purposes of this discussion are to help students begin to recognize the inherent systemic inequality in the provision of mental healthcare, and to recognize social work's role in advocating for equitable and autonomous care.

An example might be that by providing learning material to caregivers, the intervention assumes a certain education and comprehension by the caregiver that may not exist.  This puts the client at a higher risk to receive the proper care and could result in significant harm.  Since the code of ethics stresses the importance of autonomous decisions on care, Interventions should include a specific training regimen and consent by both the client and caregiver to be involved in the intervention with special attention given to not pressuring either to do so and seeking alternatives when these interventions are not preferred.
