Identify and research a LOCAL policy from an area that you are familiar with or are interested in (your hometown, where you live now, where you want to live in the future).
Most local laws are called "ordinances" or "municipal codes" so using those terms in your search might help you find local policies. In addition, there is a website that hosts the municipal codes for many cities throughout the U.S. https://library.municode.com/# (Links to an external site.)
You might find it helpful to begin your search there.
Questions
Prepare a response to each item below.
- Describe the policy. What is its purpose? What does it do?
- Why do you think the policy was needed?
- Does it impact health? If so, how? If not, why not? (Remember the health determinants.)
- Who/what agency is responsible for enforcing the policy?
- Do you think the policy is a good one? Why or why not?
- Do you think the policy should be changed or modified in any way? If so, how?
When you post your response, make sure to number each part of your response to coordinate with the questions presented.
Sources & Citations
You should identify at least three of your own sources to support your responses. This does not include your textbook. You should cite your textbook if you rely on it for your responses, but it does not count as one of your three sources. In addition to the MuniCode site, you may be able to find press releases, newspaper articles, or other sources that elaborate on the local policy. Students have even called the local government agency to ask about specifics of the policy, so feel free to gather information using methods other than just the internet. More general sources may provide information about the background of the problem that the local policy is aimed at addressing. Avoid unknown sources of information that may not be credible or reliable.
Using in text citations is required in addition to your list of sources at the end. Review APA format if you are not sure how to cite a source. Here is a resource on citing Internet sources. https://poorvucenter.yale.edu/writing/using-sources/citing-internet-sources
