If you were to create a 2D printer using only one motor (looking at it from the hardware side), how would you go about it?

If you were to create a 2D printer using only one motor (looking at it from the hardware side), how would you go about it? The laser printer needs to be working how it should (paper going into printer, paper going on inkpad,  ink on paper, then paper coming out. Make sure to include a drawing and a detailed explanation on how you would go about this. 

My first idea: use a lot of gears, belts, and pulleys. and work from there...
