In a organic chemistry lab we synthesized methylbutanes by distilling 2-methyl-2-butanol. We added drops of
phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid to butanol and distilled it. The reaction equation shows the addition of the acids breaking down the butanol to two isomers of 2-methyl-butene, and in the posltab analysis section of the experiment it asked how we identified the two isomers. Slightly confused by how we would've been able to identify the isomers. Because after distillation we allowed the layers to separate and removed the bottom aqueous layer and dried the organic phase with anydrous sodium sulfate. Used this liquid to produce a GC and NMR spectra.
