In Formal Paper #1 you will offer an analysis of two of these works in a Compare and Contrast Short Essay.  Your essay should include a Thesis Statement, Supporting Arguments, and Support and Evidence (Quotes) from the Text. The goal of the paper is to examine an idea, theme or trope of the texts and to expand on that as the focal point of something larger to understand about the personal narrative, short story, or poem or combination of them (compare and contrast) that you have selected. Think about some larger ideas like Identity, Language, Communication, Gender, poverty, stereotypes, parenting, economic exploitation, the value of hard work, the American Dream, sexuality, ethnicity, and so much more. There are many possibilities and angles of approaches. The focus of this paper is truly up to you.

Instructions: Select at least two texts that you have been assigned to read in the first three weeks of this class and determine what you see to be a common meaning or focus of these works.  Then, analyze how the writers develop this meaning within the texts: look at what specific structures, word choices, metaphors, or examples they use to invite the reader to understand and to share the experience of this understanding in reading these two works. (In developing this paper you may include passing reference to additional works, but you need to give focused examples from at least two texts.) The draft should be at least 3-4 pages in length and needs to make effective use of specific textual examples to support your argument. Pls see 2 texts below for assignment
