In-text citation basics:

1)      All quoted information taken from a story must be presented with a signal phrase and cited with in-text citation.

2)      A good signal phrase will indicate who is speaking.

3)      The in-text citation should include the author’s last name, the year of publication, and the page number from the bottom of the PDF.

Examples:

Montressor says, “He had a weak point—this Fortunato— although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine” (Poe, 1842, p. 59).

Sue looks out the window and asks Johnsy, “Didn’t you wonder why it never moved when the wind was blowing? Oh, my dear, it is Behrman’s great masterpiece—he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell” (O’Henry, 1907, p. 17-18).

Practice – each of the sentences below come from “The Last Leaf” or “The Cask of Amontillado”. Format each quote with an appropriate signal phrase, quotation marks and a correct APA citation.  Use your PDFs of the stories and the publication information to do this.
