In the novel Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, the cloned dinosaurs were genetically engineered so as to be unable to survive outside the island park because they were unable to synthesize the amino acid lysine. This was supposed to make the dinosaurs dependent on their makers to feed them a source of lysine.
