In this essay summary, you are to going to evaluate several websites, then provide your analysis of the information. One aspect of community corrections involves the use of the sex offender registry, which provides anyone, anywhere with information regarding the identification of sex offenders and their locations.
- First, go to the National Sex Offender Public website. On this website, you will find information on sex offenders registered nationally and by state. You can search by offender name, state, county or individual address. First, on this page, click on the Search tab at the top. You can search by name and/or zip code in the left side box and search by address radius in the right-side box. Type in your address and select the distance of 3 miles. Provide an analysis of what you find, including the number of offenders and offenses. If there are no sex offenders living within 3 miles of you, consider yourself lucky! If there are no offenders within 3 miles, choose another address of a family member or friend and see what you can find.
- Next, go to the State of Georgia Sex Offender website. In the middle of the page, click on Sex Offender Search Page. Once on this page, look up your home county (if you are not from Georgia, simply choose a county). Next, peruse through the various sex offenders, and provide examples of the various categories of offenses, including the state of conviction. Then, go back to the registry page and click on the next heading: Bi-Monthly Map. This will bring up a map of the entire state of Georgia. Identify your home county (if from Georgia) and the number of registered sex offenders. Also, identify the county with the most and the county with the least number of registered sex offenders.
- Provide an analysis of sex offender registries. Most sex offenders are placed on a registry and many have stipulations regarding where they can live and where they can go, including having to move if another family moves into his neighborhood. Are sex offender registries in general effective? Do the sex offender registries actually violate the 8th Amendment provision against cruel and unusual punishment? In other words, many believe that if a person has served his time, adding an additional provision, which includes additional criminal sections if violated, is additional punishment. Others argue that most sex offenders are predators and should be identified. For example, we know that pedophiles are always repeat offenders (there is no one-time pedophile), so is it more important for the community to be able to identify these people or are constitutional rights more important? Does it prevent crime, is it a deterrent, or is it simply additional punishment? Why? 500 words and APA format
