Assignment 1 (Macro-level):

You are part of a committee hired by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to develop strategies to help combat increasing crime in some impoverished County neighborhoods. To be able to recommend solutions to the problem, you must have a theoretical understanding of why the crime is occurring in the first place. For this essay question, you will use Routine Activities Theory to explain why crime is occurring in these neighborhoods and use that theory to make a recommendation to the Board on how to decrease crime in these neighborhoods.

For your essay, you must do the following:

  1. Use Routine Activities Theory
  2. Using at least one explanatory concept from this theory, explain why these neighborhoods might be seeing an increase in crime.
  3. Using the same theory and concept you used above, come up with a program/policy to help decrease crime in those neighborhoods. It must be clear how the program/policy is based on the concept and the theory.
