INF303 Network Management

Wireless Network Map Project Assignment 10 points

The Situation

It is your first day at your new job as Network Administrator at Northeast Indiana College (NIC). Their one building looks remarkably like Best Hall. Your predecessor left no documentation for you. Your team of four is tasked with mapping the wireless network in the building, submitting a report to your supervisor, and presenting the recommendation to the administration.

  1. Use the Ekahau HeatMapper JPEG images of Best Hall to represent the wireless at NIC
  2. Using the HeatMapper images, construct a table of all of the TRINE INTERNET wireless access points in Best Hall. In this table, identify:
  3. SSID of each access point
  4. MAC address of each access point
  5. Channel of each access point
  6. Security on each access point
  7. IEEE 802.11 version on each access point
  8. The Max Rate of each access point
  9. Assume the server and network equipment is located in Room 122. On clean floorplan/maps, identify the location of each access point. Describe, in detail, how each access point will be physically connected to the main network. The details will include network cabling requirements and power requirements.
  10. In the report:
  11. a. Format:
  12. Use the IEEE format (see example), but you do not need to use two columns.
  13. Please note the headings. Major headings are centered. Minor headings are left-justified.
  14. Center all images and tables.
  15. Cite any (and all) sources used.
  16. b. Sections:
  17. INTRODUCTION
  18. DISCUSSION
  19. A brief discussion of IEEE 802.11 wireless in which you define
  •  SSID
  •  Channel
  •  versions (a, b, g, n)
  •  security
  •  Signal strength (for example, what does -71 dBm mean?)
  • Feel free to make each topic a sub-section.
  1. WIRELESS ACCESS POINTS

INF303 Project

Include the images generated by the HeatMapper for each floor of Best Hall and the SSID table

  1. WIRELESS COVERAGE
  2. Discuss the wireless coverage in Best Hall. Are there dead spots? Are some spots covered by too many access points? Should any access points be moved or added? Where? Defend your answers.
  3. RECOMMENDATION
  4. State your conclusion concerning Best Hall wireless coverage and any recommendations you have to fix the problem(s). Include in this section your clean maps of the wireless network and discussion of wiring and electrical requirements.
