This week we were to review the Hazmat Incident Map on the site provided in the forum section. For those in the hazardous material shipping, transport and receiving business this map is an invaluable tool for a couple of reasons. The first reason that this map may be useful for the shippers and transporters, is it can be used to determine the most efficient route to avoid any delays in the product reaching it’s destination. Furthermore, this map can alert shippers as to the type of danger that is present, allowing them to determine whether their material will have an adverse interaction with the chemical that was involved in the incident. This can be useful if there is no other chance of choosing an alternate route. On the other end of the spectrum, the receiver can determine whether it was there product that was involved in the incident, if the shipping company has not notified them.

The second part of this assignment was to review the Wiser web site and consider how useful and important to first responders. Imagine a first responder showing up on the scene with a huge binder, fumbling through the pages trying to determine what type of chemical hazard they are dealing with. Before we had iPads and smartphones, that can store enormous amounts of information, this was probably the case. This website contains all the information they need to deal with any situation they may encounter. Not only does it give responder information about a single chemicals it also informs them on how they may interact with other chemicals.

After viewing the Hazmat Incident Map, I realized that it is a useful tool that is used to track Hazmat shipping and transporting. In the process of the shipping and transporting of hazardous materials, incidents can easily occur during the process of moving hazmat from one point to another. The Hazmat Incident Map shows the routes and locations of all the Hazmat in North America in which it makes it easier for first responders to locate and be prepared to mitigate the hazmat incidents. It is most important for people who ship hazmat because they are held responsible for there product and knows how to handle there product.
The Wiser website and application are valuable tools that can be used to help identify hazmat and give valuable information letting you know if the hazmat is harmful; if its airborne; how to protect yourself and others; what not mix the material with and how to clean it up. The Wiser system provides more complex information for first responders like substance identification support, physical characteristics, human health information and containment and suppression advice. It is very important to understand hazmat materials and how to deal with different hazardous materials. You know how control substances without becoming a casualty or putting the surrounding public in danger as well. Hazmat can cause mass casualties if not handled correctly. First responders must be able to identify hazmat and understand how to approach and mitigate it quickly and safely. The Wiser applications gives all first responders the ability to handle hazardous incidents.
